--There are two main thickening mechanisms of carbomer, including neutralization thickening and hydrogen bonding thickening.
1.Neutralization and thickening
Because it contains a certain acid group, it needs alkaline neutralization in the process of application. After being neutralized by alkalinity, the carboxyl group of capo resin is ionized.
Due to the mutual repulsion of negative charges, the curled molecular chain is extended to a state of great expansion, increasing the original volume to about 1000 times, thus playing a role of thickening.
Common neutralizers include sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, potassium bicarbonate and triethanolamine (pH 7 or so, you get a crystal clear gel), which is why Carbomer is sensitive to ions.
2.Hydrogen bonding thickening
As a carboxyl donor, carbomer molecules can be thickened by bonding with one or more hydroxyl groups to form hydrogen bonds. This reaction mechanism takes time. Common hydroxyl donors include nonionic surfactants and polyols.
